Passport Information for Gender Transitioning Students

Applying for your Passport

Prior to January 20, 2025, applicants could select “M,” “F,” or “X” as the sex designation on U.S. passport applications. Following an executive order issued on that date, the U.S. Department of State suspended changes to sex designations and discontinued issuance of passports with an “X” designation. At this time, individuals cannot obtain a new or renewed passport with a sex designation different from that assigned at birth. Previously issued passports remain valid until expiration unless otherwise revoked.
