French

Studying abroad in Pau, France gave me confidence speaking French and submersing myself with locals. Living with my host family gave me an intimate look into French life, values and culture which would not have been possible if I had never studied abroad. I encourage everyone to take that leap."

France

As a French major or minor, it is essential to experience francophone culture first-hand to fully understand the language. Studying abroad is the best way to do this, because it allows you to completely immerse yourself for a significant period of time and avoid feeling like a “tourist”. Employers appreciate candidates with cross-cultural communication skills who have the ability to adapt to changing environments. Choose a French speaking country that complements your future career aspirations. For example, French majors/minors with interest in international relations may find it beneficial to study in Geneva, Switzerland, site of the UN, or Brussels, Belgium the “capital of Europe” home to the “unofficial” EU headquarters. Alternatively, take the opportunity to live in Grenoble, nestled in the Alps, while studying French and business, or hone your French skills walking the streets of Paris.

Students interested in combining their study abroad experience with an internship, or those looking to focus solely on an internship, have many options. Customized internships are available in a few locations through GVSU internships, as well as other programs such as ISA and World Endeavors
