Outcome HCO-A Understanding of Health Communication Discipline

Graduates of the Health Communication program at GVSU establish a solid understanding of the health communication discipline in general.
Objective 1 Students in the Health Communication program will be able to identify the important reasons to study health communication.

The finding of the data collected from 36 students shows that 83% of has achieved the threshold of 11 out of 15.

Outcome HCO-B Communication Competence

Graduates of the Health Communication program at GVSU communicate competently in health care contexts or health care related careers.
Objective 1 Students in the Health Communication program will be able to explain different health-related terminologies.
Objective 2 Students in the Health Communication program will be able to describe different communication aspects/concepts applied to health care.

The finding indicates the average score of the group project for both sections of COM 209 (60 students in total) group project is 41 out of 50. It has met the threshold.

Outcome HCO-C Understanding of the Health Care System

Graduates of the Health Communication program at GVSU gain a good understanding of the overall health care system.
Objective 1 Students in the Health Communication program will be able to recognize the structure of the health care system.

In spring semester of 2019, there were 19 students enrolled in COM 410 (Senior Seminar in Health Communication). Each of them completed a reading report on the book titled "Our Unsystematic Health Care System". Each report consists of 3 components which discuss the overview of health care delivery; the challenges of health care delivery; and comparative health systems in the United States. Two students scored 28; and fifteen students scored 27. The rest of two students scored 25. In this case, about 90% students has achieved the threshold.

Objective 2 Students in the Health Communication program will be able to review different health care reforms.

Outcome HCO-D Aspects of Health Care

Graduates of the Health Communication program at GVSU speak knowledgeably about how the many aspects of health care fit together and influence each other.
Objective 1 Students in the Health Communication program will be able to distinguish the roles of different groups involved in health care, such as patients, health care providers, families, and social networks in communication.
Objective 2 Students in the Health Communication program will be able to examine the sociocultural issues that influence health care and communication.

Outcome HCO-E Effective Consumers of Research

Graduates of the Health Communication program at GVSU become effective consumers of research in health care and communication.
Objective 1 Students in the Health Communication program will be able to locate the appropriate and credible health information and communication sources.
Objective 2 Students in the Health Communication program will be able to analyze the source and offer their critiques.

Outcome HCO-F Theories Application

Graduates of the Health Communication program at GVSU apply theoretical frameworks/models to design health campaigns.
Objective 1 Students in the Health Communication program will be able to review different health behavior change theories/models.

Among 19 students enrolled in COM 410, 15 of them scored 24 or above on the question regarding a theory critique in the final exam. In this case, only about 79% has achieved the threshold of 80%.

Objective 2 Students in the Health Communication program will be able to employ the appropriate health behavior change theories/models to design health campaigns.

Outcome HCO-G Knowledge Application

Graduates of the Health Communication program at GVSU demonstrate confidence in putting the knowledge learned into the actual practice.
Objective 1 Students in the Health Communication program will be able to apply the knowledge, skills, and theories into their internship position in health care setting.

Graduates of the Health Communication program at GVSU are prepared to experience active and effective community engagement.
Objective 1 Students in the Health Communication program will be able to work with different communities to demonstrate health-related information effectively for the education and potential behavior change.
Objective 2 Students in the Health Communication program will be able to develop a collaboration with a local organization/community on a health-related topic.
