Outcome B Leadership Development in Student Organizations

Student Life will foster a supportive infrastructure for registered student organizations (RSOs), providing students with opportunities to gain hands-on leadership development experiences and increase their level of confidence in their leadership ability.
Objective 1 Students involved in registered student organizations (RSOs) will indicate a greater connection with leadership ability than students not involved in RSOs through the Office of Student Life.

From the 2021 Office of Student Life survey, 59% of students indicated either "extremely positive" or "somewhat positive" in response to the following question: How has your involvement impacted your leadership skill development?" We recognize that this data was taken during a time of great challenge for student organizations, due to COVID.

From the 2021-22 Office of Student Life survey, 70.28% of students indicated either "agree" or "strongly agree" in response to the following statement: "I have grown as a leader because of my student organization involvement."

Based on the 2019 OSL survey, of all random respondents, 31.82% indicated they they "consider themselves to be actively involved with the Office of Student Life"; 53.74% indicated that they are "actively involved with registered student organizations"; 14.44% indicated that they are "actively involved with Greek Life" and 11.23% indicate that they are "actively involved with Club Sports". Of all of these respondents, 64.38% of students said that "their involvement has impacted their leadership skills "extremely positively" and 24.03% indicated that involvement has impacted their leadership skills "moderately positively".

Based on 2018 OSL Annual Survey, 51.14% of students indicate that due to involvement in Office of Student Life activities (including RSO's) that they "consider (themselves) to be a leader on campus or in your community."

Data demonstrates a significant correlation between participation in a registered student organization (RSO) and student confidence in leadership ability. It also demonstrates a significant correlation, for those students who are involved in RSOs, between their confidence in leadership capacity and OSL support.

59.48% of respondents to the 2018 OSL Annual survey indicated that "Involvement at GVSU with the Office of Student Life has enhanced my leadership ability". 50% of those who received the OSL Annual Survey were Student Organization executive board members, while 50% of survey recipients were randomly sampled.
