Whoosh! Wam! Pow! The GVSU Dodgeball Club is dipping, ducking, and diving their way through the semester. However, the club is more than just playing ball; meaningful memories and bonds have been made through the spirit of competition. Keep reading to learn more about the Dodgeball Club.
Grand Valley State University offers students many opportunities to pursue their interests and try new hobbies through Registered Student Organizations, so of course, there's a dodgeball team! The club participates in the National College Dodgeball Association in competitions throughout the entire school year. They compete in events across the country, primarily in the Midwest, such as the Michigan Dodgeball Cup and the National Championship tournament.
The Grand Valley Dodgeball Club provides a high-energy experience that also teaches players the value of respect and teamwork. The coach of the team, Kevin Bailey, summarizes their core philosophy.
“The Dodgeball Club’s mission is to be a thriving student organization that develops students and enriches their college experience. From a competitive standpoint, our mission is the same every year: win the National Championship,” said Bailey.
To get ready for competitions, members of the club participate in weekly practices held on the Valley campus. Students use the skills they hone during practices to hit hard and, most importantly, have fun. The support that members show for one another continues both on and off the court. Club Relations Coordinator Chris Kiewicz comments on how the team’s bond is strengthened through competing.
“It's not just about going up and down a court and throwing dodgeballs at each other, it's never about who's better than who, it's about the forever friendships we make, and knowing that no matter what every single person on this team will have my back through thick and thin,” Kiewicz explained.
The Grand Valley Dodgeball Club is a perfect example community that students can find through a shared love of sport. Club members show just as much solidarity for each other as they show determination during heated competitions. Students who are looking for a vibrant student organization with big ambitions should pick up a dodgeball and give it a try!
