Background –

Counseling Psychologists work to assess and evaluate an individual’s problems through the use of interviewing, observation and counseling therapy interventions. Generally, counseling psychologists work to assist the individual in achieving their personal, social, vocational or educational goals.  They may also address issues related to development or adjustment.*

How does a Counseling Psychologist differ from a Clinical Psychologist:  There is a lot of overlap in training for Counseling Psychologist and Clinical Psychologists. However, while a Clinical Psychologist is typically trained in more severe pathology (psychosis), a Counseling Psychologist may be interested in diversity, multicultural issues, and relationship issues.  Also, Counseling Psychologists typically do not work in university or research settings.

Additional Education – A Counseling Psychologist has a Ph.D in Psychology and they must also carry a clinical license.  However, you can also do talk therapy (without the title of Counseling Psychologist but with the title of “counselor”) with a masters degree.
