Health and Physical Education Program
The Health and Physical Education Teacher Education Program is designed to prepare health and physical education professionals to promote quality programs, lifelong skills and developmentally appropriate activities for students in PreK-12 educational settings.
The HPE program communicates with students through a Google Group called HealthandPEMajors
To join a group, click Join group or Apply to join group. If a group is invite-only, you can ask to be invited by clicking Contact owner.
If you have any issues finding or joining the group please contact Dr. Johnson at [email protected].
Certification
There are several paths to becoming a certified teacher in Michigan:
- Current PE majors will become certified to teach K-12 Physical Education and an additional certification in a teachable minor (see list https://www.gvsu.edu/coe/undergraduate/undergraduate-secondary-education-program-26.htm#minor) during the program at GVSU.
- Beginning Fall 2020, all programs in the state of Michigan require a combined Health and PE (HPE) major, thus eliminating the requirement of a teachable minor.
MTTC Test Centers
All eight of Michigan’s Pearson Professional Centers have reopened and are operating at 50% capacity to ensure safe distancing for test-takers. These centers are located in Ann Arbor, Dearborn, East Lansing, Grand Rapids (two centers), Marquette, Southfield, and Troy. Other test centers operated by colleges, universities, and private companies are also beginning to reopen. Please direct any inquirers to the MTTC website at https://www.mttc.nesinc.com/ for further information on available test center locations in Michigan.
We will continue to issue temporary one-year teaching certificates to the candidates identified in the rosters submitted by EPIs who haven’t been able to test due to test center closures, until further notice.
As noted on the MTTC website, the last testing date for MA (Health (043)) and MB (Physical Education (044)) will be September 30, 2023. As a result, the last date for candidates to apply for either endorsement will be September 30, 2028 (five years after the last possible testing date).
