Barbara Corbató is active as an orchestral musician, chamber music performer, and educator. As an in demand orchestral performer, she has performed a broad range of styles, composers, and genres at concert halls across the country and abroad. Currently Assistant Principal Viola of the Grand Rapids Symphony, she has performed hundreds of concerts in Grand Rapids and the surrounding areas with the orchestra. Prior to joining the Grand Rapids Symphony, she performed with the New World Symphony, Michigan Opera Theatre, Columbus Symphony Orchestra, Aspen Chamber Symphony, Spoleto Festival orchestras in South Carolina and Italy, and the Colorado Philharmonic, where she appeared as soloist. An active chamber musician, Ms. Corbató is a member of the Perugino String Quartet and regularly performs throughout West Michigan in recital and chamber music series. She has also been a frequent guest artist with the Saugatuck Chamber Music Festival, Meijer Gardens Sunday Strings, the Grand Rapids Art Museum, and other regional venues. Equally dedicated to teaching, Ms. Corbató maintains a thriving private viola studio in Grand Rapids, mentoring students of all ages from beginning through advanced levels. In addition to her position at GVSU, she serves on the faculty of Aquinas College and was previously a longtime adjunct faculty member at Hope College. She is also Viola Sectional Coach for the Grand Rapids Youth Symphony and Classical Orchestra and has taught at Calvin College, Calvin String Summit, and Western Michigan University's Seminar Music Camp. Ms. Corbató earned both her Master of Music and Bachelor of Music degrees in Viola Performance from the University of Michigan. Her principal teachers include Donald McInnes and Yizhak Schotten. She performs on a modern instrument, a 1980 Christopher DeGroot viola.
