Tumaini Sango

Tumaini Sango is a McNair Scholar who graduated from Grand Valley in 2023 with a bachelor's degree in music, a specialization in piano performance, and a political science minor.

During his time in the McNair Scholars Program, he applied to several graduate schools and was accepted by five doctoral programs, including: Bowling Green State University, Northwestern University, University of Massachusetts-Amherst, Temple University, and Western Michigan University.

Tumaini will attend Bowling Green State University in the fall where he will pursue a Master of Music degree in piano performance and will dual-specialize in classical and jazz studies. He was offered a full-tuition waiver as well as two graduate assistantships: one teaching piano and the other assisting the jazz department.

Tumaini plans to be a piano professor and pursue other musical opportunities like performing or recording in his spare time. He thanks the McNair Scholars Program in preparing him for his graduate application process and says that his favorite aspect of the McNair program was the culminating presentations during the Summer Scholars Showcase. We wish Tumaini all the best in his educational journey!
