Application /Admission Criteria
Admission to the nursing program is highly competitive. Students who only meet minimum requirements may not be admitted. Admission is based on balanced consideration given to the following components:
- Admission Pre-Requisite GPA
- Interview
- Personal Statement
- Student Profile
Eligible applicants will have:
- Declared Nursing as major prior to application submission.
- Earned an overall GPA of 2.7 or above (includes non-GVSU college courses).
- Earned a pre-requisite GPA of 2.7 or above (includes non-GVSU college courses).
- Earned a grade of ‘C’ (not C-) or higher in all pre-requisite courses.
- Completed an application January 1-8th for admission into the Fall semester (Aug), or completed an application by August 1-8th for admission into the Winter semester (Jan).
- Adhered to the KCON course repeat policy, allowing students to repeat three Admission pre-requisite courses (only two of those courses can be BMS, CHM, or BIO.) A course cannot be repeated more than once. 1)__________ 2)____________ 3)____________
The competitive admission process admits 120 students into the Fall semester and 120 students into the Winter semester. Selected students must submit documentation of the following: physical examination, verification of immunizations, TB testing, criminal background check and drug screen, and CPR certification.
Nursing Program Progression Policies
1. A student must achieve a grade of C or higher (2.0) in each of the following nursing courses in order to progress to the next semester: NUR 265, NUR 266, NUR 316, NUR 366, IPE 407, NUR 416, NUR 467, BMS 305, BMS 310, BMS 311, BIO 355, STA 215. These courses may not be taken CR/NC.
2. A student must achieve successful completion of each clinical component (2 clinical rotations, labs, seminars) with a grade of CR (credit) in each of the following clinical courses before progressing to the next semester. If a student fails (NC-no credit) any one component he/she cannot progress to the next rotation and will receive a course grade of NC. Thus a student will have to repeat the entire course before progressing to the next level. Clinical courses: NUR 267, NUR 317; NUR 367; NUR 417.
3. A student may repeat only one of the following required nursing courses (or the equivalent): NUR 265, NUR 266, NUR 267, NUR 316, NUR 317, NUR 362, NUR 363, NUR 366, NUR 367, NUR 368, NUR 369, IPE 407, NUR 416, NUR 417, NUR 467. A student may repeat one of the following co-requisite courses: BMS 305, BMS 310, BMS 311 and BIO 355.
4. More than one failure (less than 73% or no credit clinical courses) will result in dismissal from KCON. A student who is repeating a nursing course and withdraws in good standing may re-enroll after petitioning the Undergraduate Academic Affairs Committee. A student who is repeating a nursing course and withdraws in poor (failing) standing may not re-enroll.
