Regulations for F-1 International Students

COURSE REQUIREMENTS

Undergraduate international students are required to carry no fewer than 12 credit hours each semester
Graduate international students are required to carry no fewer than 9 credit hours each semester
All F-1 students must have approval from International Student Services (ISS) before dropping or changing classes. Failure to meet these guidelines may result in the termination of your status.

On-CAMPUS WORK

Students in F-1 status are permitted to work on campus up to a maximum of 20 hours per week during full-time semesters. Students can search for and apply to available positions in Workday.
The ISS Team offers SSN Processing events each semester to help new students obtain this number, which is required for all work in the U.S. Students who attend all International Student Orientation Sessions are eligible to attend these events.
Other work options are available after graduation or if required by your major (CPT, OPT, STEM). No other work is permitted without prior authorization. Please consult with the ISS Team for details.

ADDRESS

iStudents are required to update their address within 10 days of moving. iStudents do this by updating their information in the Banner system.

TRAVEL

If traveling outside the U.S., F-1 students must have a valid Travel Signature on their I-20 document to re-enter the U.S. It is the responsibility of the student to make sure that the I-20 has this signature. Submit a Travel Signature Request to the ISS Team if you need a new signature or if you're not sure. Each signature is valid for one year from the indicated date (or 6 months to Canada & Mexico).
There will not be problems for the iStudent to leave the country at any time, but without the Travel Signature, re-entry to the U.S. may not be granted.
Please note:
- if entering the U.S. after September 15, 2026, you will be issued an Admit Until Date (AUD) which limits the time you can remain inside the U.S. in valid F-1 status.
- travel restrictions are ongoing for certain nationals. For individuals with these nationalities, we recommend evaluating the urgency of the travel plans as they will limit your ability to re-enter the U.S.

MAJOR/PROGRAM CHANGES & TRANSFERRING

Undergraduate F-1 Students:
- after September 15, 2026 immigration will not permit undergraduate students to change their major nor transfer to another institution until they have completed one academic year. After graduation, F-1 students who want to continue on to further studies are only permitted to progress to a higher degree level i.e. cannot repeat a bachelors or move down to an associates.
- after September 15, 2026 immigration will only permit F-1 undergraduates to transfer to another U.S. institution at the same level after completing 2 full-time semesters or to a higher level after completing the degree
Graduate F-1 students:
- after September 15, 2026 immigration will not permit graduate F-1 students to change their program of study at any time. After graduation, F-1 graduate students who want to continue on to further studies are only permitted to progress to a higher degree level i.e. cannot repeat a masters or move down to a bachelors.
- after September 15, 2026 immigration will only permit F-1 graduates to transfer to another U.S. institution after completing the degree and progressing to a higher level; transfers will not be permitted at any time during the degree.
