J-1 Student Transcript Release

After completing an exchange semester and/or program at GVSU, our office requests transcripts from the Records office on your behalf. We provide these transcripts directly to your home university or sponsoring agency so that they can have accurate records about your exchange. In order for us to do this without additional cost to you, we need your permission to complete this process. Below is the Transcript Release Statement:

"I agree that information in my university records may be made available to the Padnos International Center and cooperating institutions, with the understanding that the information will be kept confidential to the extent provided by law and made available only to appropriate individuals and handled with the highest level of discretion in order to protect student privacy."

Regulations for J-1 International Students

COURSE REQUIREMENTS

Undergraduate international students are required to carry no fewer than 12 credit hours each semester
Graduate international students are required to carry no fewer than 9 credit hours each semester
All F-1 students must have approval from International Student and Scholar Services (ISS) before dropping or changing classes. Failure to meet these guidelines may result in the termination of your status.

On-CAMPUS WORK

iStudents in F-1 status are permitted to work on campus up to a maximum of 20 hours per week during full-time semesters. iStudents can search for and apply to available positions in Workday.
The ISS Team offers SSN Processing events each semester to help new iStudents obtain this number, which is required for all work in the U.S. iStudents who attend all International Student Orientation Sessions are eligible to attend these events.
Other work options are available after graduation or if required by your major/program. No other work is permitted without prior authorization. Please consult with the ISS Team for details.

ADDRESS

iStudents are required to update their address within 10 days of moving. iStudents do this by updating their information in the Banner system

TRAVEL

If traveling outside the USA, J-1 students must have a valid Travel Signature on their DS-2019 document to re-enter the U.S. It is the responsibility of the student to make sure that the DS-2019 has this signature. Submit a Travel Signature Request to the ISS Team if you need a new signature or if you're not sure. Each signature is valid for 6 months.
There will not be problems for the student to leave the country at any time, but without the Travel Signature, re-entry to the U.S. may not be granted.
Please note:
- if entering the U.S. after September 15, 2026, iStudents will be issued an Admit Until Date (AUD) which limits the time you can remain inside the U.S. in valid F-1 status.
- travel restrictions are ongoing for certain nationals. For individuals with these nationalities, we recommend evaluating the urgency of the travel plans as they will limit these individual's ability to re-enter the U.S.
