2021-2022 Social Innovation Course Offerings

Registration

Graduate students are eligible to register for classes offered in Spring/Summer 2021, Fall 2021, and Winter 2022 starting March 22. Many courses fill up quickly, so don’t wait too long!

New this year: The Registrar's Office has created a new search tool that may come in handy. Course registration still takes place in Banner, but gvsu.edu/registrar/course is available for quick search queries of 2021-2022 courses without needing to log in.

Registration Override Permits

There are a number of situations in which a student may need to request a registration override permit to enroll in a course. Some examples include:

  • Registering for application courses (any course with a prefix other than "SI"). When submitting an override request to join an application course, we recommend students include an explanation such as "I'm a graduate student in the SI Program seeking a major restriction override."
  • Prerequisites for the class have not been met.
  • There are no seats available because the class is full. The instructor may or may not grant the request to join a class that is already at capacity, though it's still worth inquiring.
  • A permit is required to register for SI 661 Internship- refer to the Internship Guide for more details.
  • A permit is required to register for SI 693 Master's Project, which involves the passing of SI 690 and approval of the student's SI 690 research proposal.

Follow these instructions for submitting a registration override permit.

The student will receive a confirmation email informing them whether or not the request was approved or denied by the department. If approval was granted, this does not automatically register the student in the course. Usually, the student must then manually enter the CRN in Banner to add the class to their schedule. Within Banner under “Register for Classes,” the first menu item at the top is “Find Classes;” the next menu option to the right is “Enter CRNs.” The student will go to “Enter CRNs” and then type the specific CRN to add the class to their schedule.

The Social Innovation Program (IRIS Department) doesn't have the authority to approve an override request submitted for a class taught in a different department (courses with a prefix other than "SI"). Specific questions about override requests for these classes should be directed to the chair, director or academic coordinator of that department. If assistance is needed to facilitate this communication, please contact the Academic Coordinator for Social Innovation, Justine Kibet at kibetjus@gvsu.edu or (616) 331-8058.

Advising

The SI Advising Guide will be useful as you're planning out your schedule. This and many other resources, including the SI Student Handbook, Internship Guide, and Master's Project Guidelines, are accessible from the SI homepage: gvsu.edu/iris/si.

Reach out to your assigned SI faculty advisor to schedule a virtual advising meeting if you haven't done so already. If you're not sure who your faculty advisor is, this info can be located within Banner under Student, Student Records, View Major and Advisor Information. Be proactive in connecting with your faculty advisor regularly throughout your time in the Social Innovation Program.

2021-2022 Courses

SI course descriptions can be found in the online catalog. An important change to note when viewing 2021-2022 course offerings: In Fall 2021, the prefix for courses in the Public and Nonprofit Administration Program (PA) will change to PNH, so you'll see PA classes listed in Banner for spring/summer and PNH for fall and winter.

Below is a summary of SI course offerings for Spring/Summer 2021, Fall 2021, and Winter 2022. Traditional and hybrid classes are held on the Downtown Pew Campus unless otherwise noted.

As always, the most up-to-date details on course offerings are listed in Banner.
