Habitat for Humanity Service Project

Recently, Habitat for Humanity Kent County had an interfaith service project between two congregations – Temple Emanuel and Trinity Lutheran.

Habitat for Humanity had approximately 28 people work various two-hour shifts throughout the day on Sept. 13.  21 individuals were from Trinity and 7 from Temple Emanuel, who all gave up part of their family Rosh Hashanah preparations in order to paint at Habitat’s warehouse. Two different presentations were made during the day about the meaning of Rosh Hashanah and so it was a service and understanding event.

During the day, they learned this:

From 1896 to 1898, the new small Trinity congregation conducted worship and instruction in the lecture hall of the Reformed Jewish Temple Emanuel, then located on Ransom Ave. NE in Grand Rapids. Both Trinity and Temple Emanuel’s memberships at the time were almost exclusively German so they shared a common nation of origin.
