Description
‘Environmental racism’ is the term which describes the thinly-disguised framework of systemic racism which oppresses disenfranchised, BIPOC communities through deliberate exposure and positioning of these communities toward harmful environmental factors, including exposure to toxic pollution, poisoned water, food insecurity, inequitable healthcare, and forcing these communities to bear the current brunt of climate change. Attend this breakout session to participate in an interactive simulation designed to highlight the existence of and methodologies through which environmental racism is perpetuated, and the role each of us has to play in its eradication and reversal of its effects.
Facilitator: Hannah Huggett
My name is Hannah Huggett (they/them). I love nature, writing, music, and people. My relationships to these, and to myself, have taught me the most in life. My central interest is in climate and racial justice as a youth leader of my community’s Sunrise Movement chapter. I believe all theories must be questioned and will often be pulverized by the demands of life, but that striving toward human unity is a constant goal that we can achieve by working toward a compassionate model of love and justice.
