Message from the President: we are committed to the values of inclusion and equity, standing firmly against bigotry and intolerance in all its forms

January 31, 2020

Dear campus community,

This is day one of a healing process for our campus. Let me start by reassuring everyone that my commitment to inclusiveness and a healthy climate is resolute. I know we have been impacted by the deplorable comments we read this week, particularly our Jewish, Native American and other impacted communities. What impacts some, ultimately impacts us all. My hope is that we can use the events of the week to open conversations that will provide an opportunity for learning, reflection and a deepened understanding. Grand Valley’s liberal education mission will guide our way forward.

I believe in the power of education and Grand Valley’s ability to be a leader in discussions around power and accountability. With my appreciation and full support, several groups on campus are collaborating on an educational series to include sustained education and dialogue around how to address insensitivity, hate and harmful systems that continue to plague our society. The Division of Inclusion and Equity and the Campus Interfaith Resources office, partnering with the Native American Advisory Council and several faculty experts, are planning events to discuss various subjects, including the Holocaust, the impact of colonization on the Native American community, and other subjects addressing matters of profound importance. These discussions will include how we create action that addresses harm and elevates the change needed for everyone to feel valued and included.

Let me be clear, we are committed to the values of inclusion and equity, standing firmly against bigotry and intolerance in all its forms.

The well-being of our campus community is our top priority. The University Counseling Center offers support for students experiencing overwhelming emotions. Please reach out to the UCC at (616) 331-3266 for services, and the Human Resources Office provides a number of resources for employees. Campus Interfaith Resources in the Division of Inclusion and Equity is also available for support. Coordinator Kevin McIntosh can be reached by phone at (616) 331-3207 or by email at [email protected].

Sincerely,

Philomena V. Mantella, President
