Haas Update on Commitment to Safety

August 27, 2018

(This message was originally emailed to all GVSU students and employees)

Dear Campus Community,

Like many of you, I was disturbed and saddened by the report of a sexual assault impacting our community over the weekend.  While the Ottawa County Sheriff’s office investigates incidents that occur off-campus, I want to take a moment to remind you that we need to watch out for each other; if you see something, say something.

As a campus community, we have a responsibility to each other. Creating a campus community free from sexual violence takes vigilance from all of us. Every member must play an active role in fostering a healthy community. While we must care for each other, let me be clear — sexual assault is only the perpetrator’s fault.

We have programs, offices and a police department to help keep you safe and numerous options to support you if you need assistance. Here is a website that provides essential information on campus safety:www.gvsu.edu/safety.

Open and frequent communication is critical to creating an attentive campus community. We are committed to keeping you informed on matters related to campus safety.

Thank you for your commitment to Grand Valley and to each other. You can rest assured of our commitment to you. Together, we can make a difference.

Very respectfully,

Thomas J. Haas

President
