Message from Dean Rullman: Information about Free Expression

August 27, 2018

(This message was originally emailed to all GVSU students)

Dear Student:

As we begin the first week of the fall semester, this is a good time for us to remember the importance of our university to the ideals of free expression. Indeed, public expression of divergent perspectives is fundamental to democracy and to our very mission as a university. We realize, however, that sometimes defending the rights of free expression can also create conflicts and offense within our community. To help articulate both our obligations to free expression and our commitments to a healthy, dignified, and inclusive community, Grand Valley State University has developed a document called Context for Free Speech. I encourage you to review it to understand the university’s obligations and commitments, as well as rights of and resources for all members of our university community.

Have a great fall semester.

Loren J. Rullman, Ph.D.

Vice Provost for Student Affairs & Dean of Students

Grand Valley State University
