Holocaust expert and students to perform play about the man who coined the term "genocide"
Robert Skloot, a noted expert on theater and the Holocaust, will lead a group of Grand Valley students in a staged reading of his play, "If the Whole Body Dies: Raphael Lemkin and the Treaty against Genocide." The play is a work about Raphael Lemkin, the man who created the term "genocide" and who was responsible for creating an international treaty against it. The one-act play will be performed November 8 followed by an audience discussion. This event is free and open to the public.

Library exhibit examines big data through works of art
Can data become meditative and bent toward poetry? This question is being posed and answered by a new art exhibit located in the Exhibition Space of the Mary Idema Pew Library. "Reading Time Across Words and Numbers" examines big data and design thinking through a collection of works of art inspired by sets of data. The exhibit will be on display through October 29.

New GVSU podcast spotlights historical letters and the stories behind the people who wrote them
"To the Letter: A Podcast from Grand Valley State University Special Collections and University Archives" is a new, episodic podcast that was created to provide more exposure to the various historical collections owned by the university. The initial episodes will spotlight a correspondence of letters between a member of the U.S. Army 26th Infantry Division and his sweetheart during World War II. Grand Valley students have been tapped as voice actors who will portray the authors of the letters during each episode.

Quest-based game app aims to familiarize students with library resources
As a new academic year is underway at Grand Valley, a quest-based game app called Library Quest is aiming to educate students about important library resources and spaces. Through completing quests in the game, students can learn about the Knowledge Market, how to use tools like library databases and Document Delivery to request books and articles, how to read call numbers to locate books in the stacks, and much more. Library exhibit aims to ease students into college life
College life can be a big pill to swallow for some first-year students. New living spaces, loaded class schedules and many miles between Grand Valley and home can be intimidating for some but a new exhibit is aiming to alleviate those concerns. "Tied Together" is a unique effort by University Libraries to welcome students to campus by inviting them to use string art to make connections to one another. The exhibit will be on display through September 24 in Mary Idema Pew Library.

Scholars give presentations at showcase
When she was young, Claire Efting raised chickens, goats, sheep and cows as a member of a 4-H club. At the Summer Scholars Showcase August 1, Efting, a social work major, said raising and, at times, selling animals and livestock made a remarkable impact on her life and "fueled her research."

Exhibit defines misunderstood library terms
"Graphic Language in the Library" is an informational exhibit designed by three student graphic design teams. Each team created campaigns consisting of both visual and text pieces that illustrate the definitions of frequently used and misconstrued library terms. The exhibit will be on display March 20-29 in the Mary Idema Pew Library Exhibition Space, located on the atrium level.

Grand Valley names new dean of University Libraries
Grand Valley State University Provost Gayle R. Davis has announced the appointment of Annie Bélanger as dean of University Libraries. Bélanger will bring with her to Grand Valley a diverse professional background, having worked in a variety of roles in most types of libraries, ranging from corporate and governmental to academic.
