Researcher studying whether food production could be safer with new E. Coli test

A Grand Valley researcher has been awarded nearly $100,000 to study the effectiveness of a new method of detecting E. Coli bacteria that could improve the safety of agricultural food production in Michigan.

Showcase highlights student research

Despite the devastating effects of Hurricane Maria on Puerto Rico, senior biology major Brendan Kosnik learned some of the island's trees and plants are very resilient. Kosnik was among 30 undergraduate researchers who gave presentations July 24 at the Summer Scholars Showcase held in the DeVos Center.

Biochemistry major selected for Posters on the Hill competition

Uyen Pham, a junior majoring in biochemistry, has had a great month. The native of Vietnam is the first Grand Valley student since 2014 to get a research proposal accepted at the prestigious Posters on the Hill competition sponsored by the Council on Undergraduate Research.

GVSU receives $1 million grant to support STEM students

A new project at Grand Valley will financially help academically talented, low-income students seeking an education in science or engineering, while providing them with mentoring and hands-on learning and research opportunities. The project received a $1 million grant from the National Science Foundation. The program will create a set of progressively increasing four-year scholarships for at least 50 Grand Valley students.

Scholars give presentations at showcase

When she was young, Claire Efting raised chickens, goats, sheep and cows as a member of a 4-H club. At the Summer Scholars Showcase August 1, Efting, a social work major, said raising and, at times, selling animals and livestock made a remarkable impact on her life and "fueled her research."
