Students learn the art exhibition process through competition showcase
The 5th Annual Juried Student Exhibition will be on display through March 30 in the Padnos Student Art and Design Gallery located in Calder Art Center on the Allendale Campus. An award ceremony and special reception will take place Wednesday, March 22, from 4:30-6 p.m.

Exhibit defines misunderstood library terms
"Graphic Language in the Library" is an informational exhibit designed by three student graphic design teams. Each team created campaigns consisting of both visual and text pieces that illustrate the definitions of frequently used and misconstrued library terms. The exhibit will be on display March 20-29 in the Mary Idema Pew Library Exhibition Space, located on the atrium level.

Ott Lecture to focus on energy challenges of the 21st century
Thomas Meyer, Director of the Energy Frontier Research Center on Solar Fuels at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, will be the featured speaker for the Ott Lecture on March 23. During his presentation, Meyer will provide an overview of the current status and global future of energy supplies with an emphasis on new and emerging technologies that could shape the future of energy production.

Students win media awards for TV, radio and news
Several students working for GVTV, WCKS "The Whale" radio, and the "Lanthorn" recently received multiple awards for their work at Grand Valley. Broadcast content produced by GVTV and WCKS students recently received honors from the Michigan Association of Broadcasters Student Media Awards. Staff for the "Lanthorn" also won awards in the 2016 College Better Newspaper Contest, sponsored by the Michigan Press Association.

Composition competition to examine media overload
Grand Valley students will put their composing skills to the test when they create original pieces of music for an upcoming competition inspired by the current Art Gallery exhibition "Comfortably Numb." The one-minute compositions will be performed by the award-winning New Music Ensemble in rapid succession and judged by a guest panel and the listening audience for various prizes.

Professor uses puppets to teach students, connect with community
Jason Yancey, associate professor of Spanish, brought his more than 15 years of puppeteering experience to Grand Valley in 2009. Since then, he has incorporated his unique expertise into upper-level Spanish theater and drama courses. During these classes, students write and produce original Spanish puppet shows, create their own puppets, and perform in the community.

Music majors work with local students to compose and perform
Music students from Grand Valley recently completed an internship with the Grand Rapids Symphony, during which they helped 20 local high school students compose pieces of music that were performed at the symphony's annual "Symphony with Soul" concert on February 18.

New book highlights the life and art of Mathias J. Alten
A new publication spotlights the life and artistic works of Mathias J. Alten, who called the city of Grand Rapids his home. The book, entitled "Mathias J. Alten: An Evolving Legacy," is a hard cover monograph that includes color illustrations and scholarly essays exploring Alten's artistic legacy. Grand Valley State University owns the largest known single public collection of Alten's works and papers in the world.

"Detroit" to be completely produced, performed by students
"Detroit" will be the first directing gig for Robbie Bell, a senior theater major. The production is a part of the Theater Department's annual Performance Studio Series, which gives upper-level theater students the opportunity to apply skills learned in class. "Detroit" depicts two seemingly normal couples who strike up a friendship at a backyard barbecue. However, once secrets come out, they realize that not everyone is who they seem.

Heartwell to discuss impact of local governments on climate change
George Heartwell, former mayor of Grand Rapids, will discuss how local city governments can take proactive measures to help solve what he considers to be one of the largest global threats. His presentation, "Beyond the Paris Accords: Adaptation Planning and Local Government," will take place February 21 on the Allendale Campus.
