GVSU Expert: Everything you need to know about move-in 2026, a Q&A with Colleen Bailey

Move-in week 2026 is just over a month away. While the week is one of the most exciting times to be on Grand Valley’s campus, it can also be overwhelming your first time. Colleen Bailey, director of Housing and Residence Life, sat down to answer a few questions about the process and how you can be as prepared as possible to move onto campus for the first time.

When is GVSU move-in this year? When will I be able to view my move-in date?

Move-in is happening on Wednesday, August 26; Thursday, August 27; and Friday, August 28. Your date is determined by which building you are moving into. Take a look at our Fall Move-In Guide to see which day you are assigned to. We ask that students arrive on the day they are assigned to make the process as smooth as possible!

Can I still sign up for on-campus housing for Fall 2026?

Yes, we still have space for students who would like to live on campus. Living on campus is a great way to be connected to all the amazing things that GVSU has to offer. It's so convenient to be close to classes, food, friends and activities. Apply for Fall 2026 housing here

How can I view my housing assignment and roommate?

Housing assignments, including roommate information, can be found in the MyHousing Portal in Banner. It is a great idea to reach out to your roommate to start coordinating and getting ready for move-in day.

Living with someone is a big transition and developing a respectful relationship requires intentional conversation about expectations. Some great questions to break the ice, outside of coordinating who will bring what items from our packing checklist, are:

  • Is there anything important that you would like me to know about living with you?
  • What about college are you most excited and nervous about?
  • What is something that helps you feel at home?
  • What would make this a great roommate experience for you?

How can I best prepare for move-in this summer?

Check out our packing checklist for things to bring and things to leave at home. Connect with your roommate and get to know them — this is a great time to start getting to know people at GV. Check out the Laker Welcome schedule because there are amazing ways to get involved every single day, and you are not going to want to miss out!

What are one or two essentials you recommend everyone bring?

Box fans are old school, but they will keep you cool! They are perfect to put in your window and help with airflow.

Think about one or two things that help you feel most at home in your space, a blanket, a chair, a poster or picture, etc. Be sure to pack these items first so you don’t forget them. Making your space your own is super helpful in transitioning away from home.

What is something you recommend leaving at home?

My answer to this is always: too much stuff.

It is best to plan out what you actually need to start the year and add as things come up. There are a lot of lists that people share about things students need for their room, but a lot of the lists include things that just aren’t necessary. Start small with necessities so you don’t feel overwhelmed and your space doesn’t feel cluttered.

I have a question about housing/packing lists this summer. How can I contact Housing and find more information before move-in?

We have a ton of resources in our Fall Move-In Guide so be sure to check that out as you prepare for your arrival day. If you have a question, please reach out at (616) 331-2120 or [email protected]. Make sure you are following us @gvsuhousing on Instagram and Facebook for tips throughout the summer and DM us if you have a question!
