Career Center can help students prep for job fair

The GVSU Fall 2023 Career and Internship Fair returns this year, hosting more than 230 employers from a variety of industries.

The event will be held from 1-5 p.m. on Thursday, October 12, at DeVos Place, 303 Monroe Ave. NW in Grand Rapids. Students and alumni have an opportunity to connect with employers to discuss full-time positions or learn about available internships. RSVP for this event on Handshake.

Megan Riksen, assistant director for the Career Center, said students can prepare by taking advantage of the job preparation resources available through the center, such as printing resumes for free or attending the CareerLab to update resumes, practice elevator pitches or ask other job-related questions.

“Our career advisors love to chat with students and help to put them at ease for the fair,” Riksen said.

The Career Center will host a Ready Room at the fair for any last-minute questions and have staff available to help attendees navigate the fair.

A list of employers with representatives at the fair is posted on Handshake. Riksen said students should familiarize themselves with these companies before heading to the fair.

“Have some questions prepared in advance to ask the employers, the more specific to the organization the better,” Riksen said.

More resources and preparation advice can be found on the Career Center website, including directions to DeVos Place by bus. Students looking for a deep dive into topics like etiquette and more can listen to the Work Like a Laker Podcast.
