Virus Action Team update: Remain resolute in preventive measures against COVID-19 to protect friends, family

Efforts by the GVSU community to fight COVID-19 are making a difference and continued vigilance is important.

Greg Sanial, vice president for Finance and Administration and director of the Virus Action Team, said VAT follows up on all positive cases reported to GVSU and discusses if extra attention is needed to specific places on or off campus. Members of the Virus Action Team also meet twice a week with public health officials from Ottawa and Kent counties.

The following preventive measures continue to be key:

  • Wear a face covering, wash your hands, social distance.
  • Maintain social distance as much as possible even with family and friends.
  • Avoid contact with friends and family members who are sick, even those with minor symptoms.
  • Individuals with COVID are contagious two days prior to symptoms.

Self-assessment

It is important to complete the self-assessment daily. The information provided helps direct support for those with symptoms or exposure and helps the Virus Action Team make decisions about managing COVID-19 on campus.

  • On a typical weekday, more than 9,000 members of the GVSU community complete the self-assessment.
  • Since September 18, more than 4,000 students have completed the self-assessment for at least 36 out of 40 days, and 1,680 students have completed it every day.

Free Flu Clinic for Students

  • Free flu clinics for students will be held on the Allendale and Pew Grand Rapids campuses beginning the week of November 16.
  • Students will be receiving an email with details and sign-up information.
  • Local Meijer pharmacists and pharmacy team members will provide the flu vaccinations at no charge to all students.
