How frequently do you look at your phone or other electronic devices? How often do you check e-mail, respond to a text message or scroll through social media?

According to the Pew Research Center, 81 percent of adults say they go online on a daily basis.

The Recreation and Wellness team at Grand Valley is encouraging students, faculty and staff to take a break from technology in an effort to improve your overall health.

Unplugged week runs through March 2 in conjunction with the National Day of Unplugging, which is March 6.

Kayla Cupples, assistant director of marketing for Recreation and Wellness, said the goal of Unplugged is to help the campus community better balance time and energy on technology with exercising, having meaningful conversations or being outdoors.

“Use extra unplugged hours each day doing something good for you and enjoy the world and people around you,” Cupples said. “Whatever you take away, we hope you get involved, be active and live healthy."

Cupples said being unplugged means something different for everyone.

“It’s really about being mindful of that time spent staring at a screen versus with the people around you,” she said.

During Unplugged, Recreation and Wellness is highlighting various events, including group exercise classes, rock climbing, club sports games and more.
