The latest results from a series of air quality tests on the Pew Grand Rapids Campus related to emissions of ethylene oxide from Viant Medical, Inc., are consistent with earlier tests that showed safe levels.

During the past few months, a series of indoor and outdoor air quality tests have been conducted by the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE, formerly the MDEQ) and by an independent company, Fishbeck, Thompson, Carr & Huber, Inc. (FTC&H), which was hired by Grand Valley.

In March and April, indoor air quality was tested in the L. William Seidman Center, the Bicycle Factory, and the DeVos Center, which are all located near the Viant facility. Outdoor tests were also conducted near these buildings. EGLE conducted outdoor tests on the Pew Grand Rapids Campus and in various Grand Rapids locations.

Test results have been reviewed by Grand Valley experts Dave Huizen, occupational health and safety program director; George McBane, professor of chemistry; and Rick Rediske, professor and researcher at the Annis Water Resources Institute. Deb Alderink, occupational safety and health manager with FTC&H, and Tammi VanTil, air dispersion consultant and president of Madison Consulting, have also reviewed the data.

EGLE said Viant has committed to shutting down the sterilization operations by the end of 2019.
