Students involved on campus have greater sense of belonging at GVSU
The GVSU Office of Student Life is home to over 400 registered student organizations, fraternity and sorority life, campus programming, civic engagement opportunities and leadership development programs, all designed to help students make the most of their college experience.
According to 2026 Office of Student Life survey data, getting involved in student life programs helps students develop a greater sense of belonging at Grand Valley and a stronger affinity for the university.
Survey respondents who attended at least one student life event during the 2025-2026 academic year were 21% more likely to agree that they belong at Grand Valley, compared to students who did not attend any student life events. They were also 25% more likely to indicate a strong affinity for GVSU.
Survey respondents who were involved in at least one student organization were 32% more likely to agree that they belong at Grand Valley, compared to students who were not involved in any student organizations. They were also 20% more likely to indicate a strong affinity for GVSU. Additionally, students involved in student organizations were 16% more likely to indicate that they are planning to return to GVSU next semester.
In the survey, students also had the opportunity to provide more information about how getting involved has impacted their college experience.
One student said, “From the very beginning, I was connected to a community that gave me a place to belong. Grand Valley was the best choice for me and gave me great opportunities to be involved.”

Another student said: “I feel like I've really found my people here. I've had plenty of opportunities to grow in my leadership skills because of my sorority. The events that the Office of Student Life hosted were a big reason as to how I became friends with the people I'm going to miss so much, so thank you.”
The survey results showed how student involvement is a foundational component of a vibrant, thriving campus community. Creating those opportunities takes collaboration among faculty, staff and student leaders.
