Goeff Bennett, PBS NewsHour co-anchor, shared his broadcasting experience with students during a Fireside Chat sponsored by WGVU Public Media on September 12 in the DeVos Center.

Bennett gave advice to students who participate in Grand Valley Student Reporting Labs, associated with PBS. This program began at the start of the fall semester and the goal is to spread interest and build skills in broadcast journalism among high school students.

“For me, broadcast journalism wraps in all of the senses. It’s what you see, it’s what you hear, it’s what you smell, in some cases, and you can convey that," Bennett said.

He offered advice for young journalists. Kerim Suleman, a senior at East Kentwood High School, expressed his appreciation for this opportunity.

Suleman said, “As a senior, having someone like this who can help you see where you want to go in terms of progression in your eventual career path is very inspiring.”

Trinity Skowronek, a journalism, broadcasting and digital media major at Grand Valley, said Bennett's advice about building a brand was insightful.

"Sometimes it’s not about getting caught up in making yourself look presentable, it’s just doing hard work and being earnest," Skowronek said.

During his career, Bennett has worked for PBS NewsHour, NBC News, MSNBC, NPR, ABC and CBS.
