The State Female Normal School, now Longwood University, in Farmville, VA, was the first institution of higher learning in Virginia to admit women for collegiate study. Naturally, it attracted superior students, many of them daughters of college professors already familiar with the fraternity idea. Among the students attending in the fall term of 1901 were five women who had become very good friends. Attractive, vivacious and intelligent, they had been recruited and bid by the existing sororities. However, if they accepted these bids, it would mean that the five would not be sorority sisters. However, rather than accepting bids that would separate the group, they decided to form their own sorority and on Nov. 15, 1901, a new sorority was organized and named Alpha Sigma Alpha. As stated in the charter, "The purpose of the association shall be to cultivate friendship among its members, and in every way to create pure and elevating sentiments, to perform such deeds and to mold such opinions as will tend to elevate and ennoble womanhood in the world." The open motto of Alpha Sigma Alpha is "Aspire, Seek, Attain."

Bill, and the reduction of Fraternity membership following the Vietnam War. If you decide to join Delta Tau Delta, you can feel comfort in knowing that more than 150 years of history and tradition will be there to greet you.

Delta Gamma was founded on the desire to "Do Good," in 1873. And that motto still remains today. What started with three women has grown into an international Fraternity with more than 250,000 members in 151 collegiate chapters and more than 200 alumnae groups. Delta Gamma's sisterhood continues to inspire women through the values that were built into our very first Constitution. Article II, written by our Founders in 1873, states: The objects of this Fraternity shall be to foster high ideals of friendship among women, to promote their educational and cultural interests, to create in them a true sense of social responsibility, and to develop in them the best qualities of character.
