Science On Tap

Science On Tap, co-sponsored by GVSU and SpeakEZ Lounge, is an opportunity for conversation, debate, and interaction between scientists and the public while drinking beer. Each month at SpeakEZ, a knowledgeable expert hosts a scientific discussion about current topics in the news such as Ebola and the paleo diet. This is a great chance to exercise your academic interests in a casual setting while enjoying great food and adult beverages.

Title: Search For The Last Eocene Hyperthermal Event: Recent Fieldwork And Research In The Uinta And Duchesne River Formations Of Utah

Speaker: K.E. Beth Townsend, Dept. of Anatomy, Midwestern University

Event Description:

Most people would say that they knew the fossil record shows evidence of climate change. Everyone saw the movie “Ice Age” and knows that mammoths and saber-tooth tigers walked the snowy earth thousands of years ago. But what most people don’t know is that the Earth experienced a series of global warming events that drastically impacted plants and animals. Dr. Townsend will be speaking about her team’s search to identify one of these global warming events, or hyperthermal events, in the rocks of northeastern Utah. The aim of this project is to better understand how global warming that occurs quite quickly can affect vertebrates and other organisms and possibly inform science about how biotas might react to our own climate crisis.
