Science On Tap, co-sponsored by GVSU and SpeakEZ Lounge, is an opportunity for conversation, debate, and interaction between scientists and the public while drinking beer. Each month at SpeakEZ, a knowledgeable expert hosts a scientific discussion about current topics in the news such as Ebola and the paleo diet. This is a great chance to exercise your academic interests in a casual setting while enjoying great food and adult beverages.
Below is the information for May's Science On Tap:
Title: Michigan's Oldest Fossils: How Yooper Pond Scum Shaped The World
Speaker: Dylan Wilmeth, Dept. of Geology, Grand Valley State University
Description: When most folks think of fossils, they imagine mammoths, dinosaurs, or ancient seashells. Earth is 4.5 billion years old, but most of these critters didn't evolve until the last 10% of Earth history. What was life like before then, and where can you find it in Michigan? Join Dr. Dylan Wilmeth on a journey through space and time as we tour the oldest fossils on Earth and in Michigan. You can touch billion-year-old samples from the Outback of Western Australia and Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Feel free to bring your own fossils, and we'll put them in their place on the great Earth Calendar.
