Dr. Nathan Cheung is known as a daring concert pianist, a cross-genre composer and improviser, and a lively educator. These roles are fueled by a life-long passion to explore musics potential to resonate with all people. 

His concert career has taken him to over 10 countries and 30 US states, with notable appearances at Carnegie Hall, the Myra Hess Memorial Concerts, and the Chautauqua Institution. Nathan has won top prizes in over 15 international and national competitions, including Los Angeles, Chicago, Seattle, and Wideman. His compositions and researchparticularly on overshadowed repertoire such as the jazz concert works of Dana Suessehave been featured in College Music Society (CMS), the National Conference of Keyboard Pedagogy (NCKP), and the American Liszt Society (ALS).  

Together with his piano partner, Eric Tran, they form the Happy Dog Duo. Known for their memorized performances and unabashed humor, they bring a fresh perspective to the duo repertoire. They won the NFMC Ellis Duo Piano Competition, MTNA Stecher-Horowitz Competition, and the Ohio International Duet and Duo Competition. Most recently, they performed concerts in Spain and Norway and their debut album will be released in 2026. 

Nathan is an Instructor of Collaboration at Vanderbilt Universitys Blair School of Music and was previously on faculty at Indiana University. He holds a DMA and two MM degrees from the Eastman School of Music, as well as a BA from Stanford University.  

In his free time, Nathan enjoys learning languages, studying history, and falling prey to the YouTube algorithm.
