Pianist So Hyang In is admired for performances that combine charismatic command of the keyboard with expressive subtlety. She has established an active international presence through performances across Asia, Europe, and North America, as well as numerous honors at major national and international competitions.
In first gained national recognition in South Korea after winning First Prize at the Joong-Ang Music Competition and Fifth Prize at the Dong-A Music Competition, one of the most prestigious competitions in Korea. Her subsequent honors include Fourth Prize at the Isang Yun International Competition, Pianist of the Year recognition from the Chosun Ilbo, and the Honorary Alumni Award from Seoul Arts High School.
Her international distinctions include First Prize at the Valsesia Musica International Competition in Italy, the Grand Prix at the Sicily International Festival and Competition, a laureate prize at the Maj Lind International Piano Competition in Helsinki, Second Prize at the Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy Hochschulwettbewerb in Berlin, and First Prize at the Music in the Mountains Festival Young Artist Competition in Colorado. She has also advanced to the semifinals of the Dublin International Piano Competition, the Hong Kong International Piano Competition, and the International Telekom Beethoven Competition Bonn, as well as to the quarterfinals of the Leeds International Piano Competition.
In has performed extensively in Germany, presenting recitals at the Schumann-Haus in Zwickau, Schloss Nymphenburg in Munich, Schloss Molsdorf, Schloss Kochberg, Weißes Haus Markkleeberg, Klassik im Kloster in Plankstetten, and Gohliser Schlösschen as part of the Elfrun Gabriel Stiftungs Klavierfestival. In South Korea, she has appeared at Kumho Art Hall, Yamaha Hall, and Cosmos Hall, Sejong Culture Art Center, Tongyeong Culture Art Center, and gave her debut concert presented by the Chosun Ilbo. Her performances in the United States include appearances on the Eisendrath House Concert Series in Ann Arbor and at CEDARS of Dexter, PepsiCo Recital Hall in Texas.
As a soloist, In has appeared with the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra, Daejeon Philharmonic Orchestra, Changwon Philharmonic Orchestra, Daejeon Youth Philharmonic Orchestra, and Music in the Mountains Festival Orchestra. She also performed Brahmss Piano Concerto No. 1 in her Meisterklasse concert in Leipzig. Her festival appearances include the Music Academy of the West, PianoTexas, Turku International Summer Piano Festival, Allegro Vivo in Austria, Sicily International Piano Festival, and Great Mountains Music Festival.
In began studying piano at the age of five and later studied with Seok Kim at Seoul Arts High School. She earned her Bachelor of Music degree with First-Class Honors from Seoul National University, where she studied with Prof. Aviram Reichert, held the Jeongju Oh Scholarship, and won the Chopin Award. She continued her studies with Prof. Antti Siirala at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater München, entering with the highest admission score and completing both her masters degree and Meisterklasse qualification with the highest marks. She also studied with Prof. Gerald Fauth at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater Leipzig, where she ranked first in the entrance examination and completed her Meisterklassenexamen with distinction (mit Auszeichnung). Her studies in Leipzig were supported by a scholarship from the Elfrun Gabriel Stiftung. She is currently pursuing a Doctor of Musical Arts degree at the University of Michigan, where she studies with Prof. Christopher Harding.
