The COVID-19 pandemic sparked a racial reckoning in the United States. With the fear of Asian businesses as hubs of COVID-19 transmission, the murder of George Floyd and its subsequent protests in 2020 to the continued anti-Asian violence and Atlanta Spa Shootings in 2021, people across the United States were beckoned to come to terms with their status within the U.S. racial hierarchy as well as (re)examining and (re)shaping our relations with each other, ourselves, and with our associated institutions. This talk asks the question of what does it mean to be Asian American in a context of rampant anti-Asian violence and discourse and how do we make sense of it with and without a grounding in Asian American Studies? Drawing upon contemporary analysis of Asian Americans in the media and interviews with Asian American Pacific Islander healthcare workers during the first year of the pandemic, I ask what can and does Asian American Studies do for making sense of this moment for those who are outside academia and what can we learn from those on the frontline? And how do communication, collaborations and dialogues between generations and ethnicities deepen the possibilities and limits of Asian American at this moment?
Communication Studies Club invites you to join us for this exciting Virtual Speaker event Thursday, March 31st from 6pm-7:15pm!

Welcome to the Asian Student Union page! For the Winter Semester of 2022, our meetings will take place in person every Wednesday at 7:00pm. We will continue to diligently adhere to all of GVSU & state-held restrictions due to COVID-19, but are hopeful to be able to hold in person meetings safely as the semester goes on!
We create a fun, family-like environment for those looking to broaden their knowledge of Asian and Asian-American traditions, culture, and more. We also discuss stereotypes, explore cultures while discussing common stereotypes. Asian Student Union hosts two signature events every year: the Asian New Year Festival and the R.I.C.E (Realizing and addressing Issues in our Culture and Education) conference. If you are interested in receiving weekly emails, please contact [email protected] or any executive board member. We cannot wait to meet you and see you every Wednesday!
