What does meaningful undergraduate research, scholarship, or creative work look like in the Humanities? How can faculty integrate skills and competencies to help students see how this work can prepare them for post-graduation? In this workshop, we'll recognize how the Humanities can present specific challenges in order to focus on the opportunities that Humanities offer to faculty and students. We'll consider how we can reframe our and our students' perspectives about these foundational learning experiences, and we'll think about project design to help students and faculty realize the possibilities of engaging in research, scholarship, and creative work. Presented by Dr. Laura Behling.
Dr. Laura Behling, Professor of English at the University of Puget Sound, WA. Laura has worked in the Humanities and in undergraduate research, scholarship, and creative work as both a faculty member working with students and in support of these as an academic leader. Her book, Reading, Writing, and Research: Undergraduate Students as Scholars in Literary Studies, was published by the Council on Undergraduate Research (CUR); she also co-led the "Undergraduate Research and Mentoring Seminar" at Elon University. She regularly reaches courses in 20th- and 21st-century U.S. literature, medical humanities, and journalism. As a Fulbright Scholar, she taught at Palacky University in Olomouc, Czech Republic (2003), and served as a Fulbright Senior Specialist at the American University of Bulgaria in Blagoevgrad, Bulgaria (2018). Her scholarly publications include Gross Anatomies: Fictions of the Physical in American Literature (Susquehanna University Press/Associated University Presses, 2008) and The Masculine Woman in America, 1890-1935 (University of Illinois Press, 2001).
