Macatawa Strata: Decommissioned Power Plant

Macatawa Strata is a site-based exploration of Holland’s eminent body of water currently referred to as Lake Macatawa. The team consisted of Sara Alsum-Wassenaar (Project Lead), Brett Colley (Project Consultant), Kate Brewer (Lead Researcher), Tess Clark (Branding and Art Lead), and Andrew Vicktory (Ceramicist). This project partnered with Holland's Board of Public Works, Culture Works and Holland's City Council. The aspect of the project we focused on this summer was researching and conducting community artifact making at the decommissioned power plant in Holland. Attendees looked at the history and present state of the land and buildings with hands-on activities. In December of 2022 we hosted a lunch for stakeholders in the redevelopment including city officials, voters, property owners, and others at the City Planning Commision meeting. Artifacts created during the public events, like the ceramic community dinnerware set, were used/ presented at the dinner and the event was catered by Mi Favorita.
