Building Trust with Nonprofits and Funders

How might community impact look different when partners come to the table as equals to co-create solutions for social challenges? What transformative opportunities are possible when partners demonstrate transparency and vulnerability to break down barriers?

In 2021 and 2022, GVSU’s Dorothy A. Johnson Center for Philanthropy and Co.act Detroit collaborated to convene the Nonprofit-Funder Dialogue Series. Over three dozen community-focused nonprofit and foundation leaders from Grand Rapids and Detroit came together through this series to engage in intentional conversations aimed at building trust and challenging the traditional roles and power dynamics that exist in philanthropic relationships. Dialogue facilitation was provided by The Eureka Group.

Series participants were integral in co-creating the frame and focus of these discussions and developing recommendations for future conversations and actions. Foremost among their focus areas was the need to channel more resources toward organizations that are led by and serve communities of color. This presentation will feature community partners, core elements of the discussions, and share the group’s recommendations.
