The paper titled "Five tripodal CMPO ligands with varying degrees of hydrophobicity: influence on f-element extraction ability and lanthanide luminescence" (published in Dalton Transactions) features research led by Grand Valley State University faculty member Dr. Shannon M. Biros alongside a team of student researchers. The study investigates five synthesized tripodal carbamoylmethylphosphine oxide (CMPO) ligands to evaluate how variations in their hydrophobic structure affect their ability to extract f-block metals—such as lanthanides, thorium, and uranium—from nitric acid solutions into organic phases, while also demonstrating that all five ligands successfully sensitize metal-centered emissions for terbium and europium complexes.
