What is your current position and what do you find exciting about it?
I am currently the Chemical Hygiene Officer and Chemistry Lab Manager at Muskegon Community College and I really enjoy getting to work with the chemistry faculty there in the development of new lab experiments for the students, especially the organic lab experiments. The ability to work with and make an impact on the next generation of chemists is an amazing experience that I am grateful for.
How did your GVSU Chemistry/Biochemistry degree help you prepare you for your current work?
My GVSU Biochemistry degree has both given me the experience needed to prepare the experiments, both from designing the experiments to the actual preparation of the chemicals required. It has also given me the ability to discuss to the potential students what they could learn in upper level chemistry courses (biochemistry, environmental chemistry, green chemistry, advanced orgo, etc.) to help get them excited to be chemists and realize the possible paths their futures can take.
