Dropping General Chemistry or Organic Chemistry components checklist
The Chemistry Department has set policies for students who wish to drop lecture or lab components in the General Chemistry series (CHM 125/126/127/128) or the Organic Chemistry series (CHM 235/236/237/238):
Dropping General Chemistry components (lecture or lab)
Dropping Organic Chemistry components (lecture or lab)
If you wish to drop a lecture or lab component in the General or Organic series, it is necessary to get a pre-requisite permit approved by your advisor or the Chemistry Department Associate Chair of Student Affairs. Before you drop, please go over the following checklist with your advisor:
- If you drop a lecture or a lab, you will not be able to proceed to the next course in the series. For instance, if you drop Principles of Chemistry I lecture (CHM 125), but stay in Principles of Chemistry I lab (CHM 126), you will not be allowed to register for CHM 127 or CHM 128 until both CHM 125 and CHM 126 have been successfully completed. There is one exception to this rule: Students who pass CHM 127 lecture but drop or do not pass CHM 128 lab are allowed to proceed to CHM 235 and CHM 236.
- It is highly recommended that you complete register for (and complete) the dropped class as soon as possible. For instance, if you stay in CHM 125, but drop CHM 126 in the Winter semester, you should complete CHM 126 in the Summer or Fall term.
- Make sure that dropping a class component will not affect your full-time status or housing contract.
- Make sure that dropping a class component will not affect your financial aid.
