Drop Policies for General Chemistry

Dropping General Chemistry components (CHM 125/126/127/128)

  • Students taking General Chemistry I will be allowed to drop CHM 125 lecture only or CHM 126 lab only without dropping the other component.*
  • Students taking General Chemistry II will be allowed to drop CHM 128 lab only without dropping CHM 127 lecture.*
  • Students who wish to drop CHM 127 lecture must also drop CHM 128 lab.
  • Students who drop CHM 125 lecture or CHM 126 lab will not be allowed to proceed to CHM 127 or CHM 128 until both CHM 125 and CHM 126 have been passed.
  • Students who drop or do not pass CHM 127 lecture will not be allowed to proceed to CHM 235 or CHM 236 until CHM 127 has been passed.
  • Students who pass CHM 127 lecture but drop or do not pass CHM 128 lab are allowed to proceed to CHM 235 and CHM 236.
  • The Chemistry Department will not make exceptions to the requirement that General Chemistry students must register for both lecture and lab in the same semester unless they have passed one of the components previously at GVSU or another institution.  This applies to guest students and students who claim that they need only lecture (or lab) for a particular program.

*In order to do drop a single component (lecture or lab), students must request a “pre-requisite waiver”, which would require meeting with a professional advisor or the Chemistry Department Associate Chair for Student Affairs (Prof. Dave Leonard, [email protected]).  Also, dropping any class must occur before the normal GVSU drop deadline, so it is important to meet with your advisor well in advance of that deadline.
