Nate Swanson shares his experiences as a graduate assistant
During the February segment of the College of Community and Public Service (CCPS) Community Connections with WGVU Morning Show host Shelley Irwin, Nate Swanson shared his experiences as a graduate assistant with the CCPS Undergraduate Advising Center (UAC).
First off, Nate is born and raised in Grand Rapids. He's earned his associate's degree from Grand Rapids Community College, his bachelor's degree in psychology from Central Michigan University, and is in his last semester at GVSU for his master's degree in higher education. He would love to work in a career center, or a leadership development position running cohort models for students that embody several elements of the CCPS where we have student-centered learning and community-based service learning initiatives.
Nate is currently involved with transfer orientation, as well as advising students majoring in hospitality and tourism management as well as public administration. His goal is to assist undergraduate students with classroom instruction, creating academic plans and journeys, and getting students connected with higher impact learning experiences, whether that be internships, faculty-led study abroad programs, or faculty mentoring. He highly encourages his students to get involved in student organizations within their major. He feels this experience has a positive impact on the student's overall success in their academic career as well as their connection to community.
Nate has gained valuable insights into the advising aspect of our students and feels blessed to work with such a great team. The CCPS UAC team embodies the College's model of Engage.Enrich.Enhance by volunteering with organizations such as 20liters, Women At Risk, and West Michigan Center for Arts and Technology.
