SPNHA professor and recent graduate partner together

Student organizations can extend beyond the classroom and the GVSU International City/County Management Association (ICMA) Student Chapter is no different.  The students involved with the ICMA Student Chapter have had several unique opportunities to deepen their understanding of local government by engaging with city and county officials during networking events at conferences, hosting the West Michigan Municipal Executives luncheon and attending local forums.  These opportunities have resulted in mentorships and career opportunities, along with writing an article with your professor.

Dr. Neal Buckwalter, associate professor, and Kahler Sweeney, recent MPA graduate, both with the GVSU School of Public, Nonprofit and Health Administration, have partnered together to write an article entitled, "ICMA Student Chapters - Partnering with the Next Generation".  This article has been published in the August 2020 issue of PM Magazine and you can read it in its entirety by clicking on the link below.

ICMA Student Chapters article

The article speaks to the ICMA's commitment and support of the next generation through the ICMA's Next Generation Initiatives with the launching of the Student Chapter Program in 2010 and so much more.

CCPS is proud of the relationships our faculty and students build together that result in published articles and presentations at conferences.  These relationships and the unique opportunities our students are given not only enhance our students' educational journey, but extend into their careers.
