History of the College

Created in July 2004, the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (CLAS) is the largest of Grand Valley's colleges and offers more than 50 bachelor's degrees (and a growing number of advanced degrees) in the natural and mathematical sciences, the humanities, the fine and performing arts, and the social sciences. All Grand Valley undergraduates build the foundation for their major studies in general education courses offered by our college.

Vision

Through our commitment to liberal education, CLAS strives to be an inclusive and equitable community of inquiry where students, staff, and faculty collaborate to pursue and create knowledge, to enact global citizenship, and to engage and support our many communities. Learn more on our website.

Special Programs

The CLAS Voyage

GVSU's College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (CLAS) Voyage allows students to explore their passions both in and out of the classroom. Student in a CLAS major will have hands-on experiences that allow them to try out new interests, develop skills that will last a lifetime, and chart a course toward their personal and professional success.

The CLAS Voyage ensures all students have access to real-world learning through four interwoven components:

1. The Embarking Experience

During their first year, students will start their Voyage off strong! Through experiences both in and out of the classroom, students will be supported in their first year by building their community, learning new skills, exploring unique opportunities, and developing confidence in their abilities.

2. Reflective Portfolio

The Reflective Portfolio helps students build their Voyage story by tracking what they've learned, showing off their work, and making connections to their goals and future careerall while building digital and technology skills.

3. Experiential Learning

Research, community engagement, internships, and study abroad are some of the ways the CLAS Voyage will transform classroom learning into real-world experience. Every CLAS student will take part in at least two hands-on learning opportunities.

4. A Capstone Experience

Whether it's a research thesis, creative project, community engagement initiative, or professional internship, this culminating experience challenges students to integrate all they've learned and apply, connect, and share all they have learned in their field.
