PHI 430 - Mind, Brain, Consciousness: Philosophy of Mind

A study of classical and contemporary philosophical perspectives on the human mind. Topics may include materialistic vs. non-materialistic conceptions of thought and consciousness; relation between mind and brain, body, behavior, and environment; artificial intelligence; animal cognition; mental illness; altered states of consciousness, self-consciousness, and personhood. Offered fall semester of even-numbered years. Prerequisite: Prior coursework in philosophy or permission of instructor.
