About the Autism Education Center
By supporting projects and initiatives that create collaboration and systems-level support, the Autism Education Center (AEC) helps schools, families, and community partners implement effective, evidence-based practices that improve educational experiences and long-term outcomes for autistic and neurodivergent students across Michigan.
Primary Work
Statewide Autism Resources and Training (START) Project
The AEC’s primary work is conducted through the Statewide Autism Resources and Training (START) Project, a state-funded initiative that provides training and technical assistance to educators serving autistic and neurodivergent students across Michigan.
Funded through the Michigan Department of Education Office of Special Education since 2001, START supports schools and educators by:
- Providing professional learning
- Support the development of a coaching structure and practices
- Promoting evidence-based practices
- Developing educational resources and tools
- Supporting inclusive practices and peer supports
- Strengthening collaboration among schools, families, and community partners
Regional Collaboration
START coordinates 14 Regional Collaborative Networks (RCNs) across Michigan to support collaboration and systems-level planning among school districts and community partners. Together, START and the RCNs help improve supports for autistic students across:
- Classrooms
- School buildings
- Districts
- Regional systems
Beyond the Classroom
In addition to supporting schools, the AEC collaborates on statewide and community initiatives related to autism, including:
- Implementation of the Michigan Autism State Plan
- Coordination with grant projects and organizations
- Applied research efforts
- University and community partnerships
- These efforts help promote meaningful inclusion and stronger systems of support for autistic individuals across Michigan.
