Statistics Career Day was a success! More than 400 students, presenters, exhibitors, educators and volunteers contributed to the event. The planning committee would like to thank everyone who helped and attended. Many valuable connections were made. Below are a few students' thoughts on their statistics career day experience. Career Day Testimonials “I have a new-found interest in the subject. Each session helped me connect statistics to real life careers, and showed how important it is everywhere. I also made connections from material we have covered in class.” “I enjoyed statistics career day because it helped me get a better understanding of how statistics can be applied to real life, and there are many more uses than I thought.” “One exhibitor I visited was Roger Konyndyk at the Steelcase table. He excitedly stated, “We’re using statistics in places they haven’t been used before!” I liked his enthusiasm.” “I chose to watch the keynote presentation. I’ve always thought that once you graduate college and get your degree, you get a job in that field and stick with that job until you retire. Dr. Lachenbruch changed my opinion on that.” “I found the representatives at the USDA table most helpful because they talked about how statistics is not a subject on its own, but a much more complex integrated part of other subjects.” “It was interesting to hear how one can apply statistics to the prescription drug market. Next time I look at the pamphlet that comes with my prescription, I will have a lot more respect for all the people that helped make it possible.” “One thing that stood out about Dr. Lachenbruch’s talk was when he said “We all know what 1.96 means, right?” And of course, I felt 95% confident that I knew!” |
