Fieldhouse/ Recreation Center

Athletic and Recreation Facilities Management and Campus Recreation are committed to providing a healthy environment that engages the Laker community. The following policies and procedures have been established to ensure quality, safe, and inclusive recreational experiences.

General Facility Rules

  1. This is a controlled facility. To gain entry, please present a valid student ID, Faculty/Staff ID, Membership card, or day pass.   Users are expected to read and adhere to all posted rules and instructions for each specific activity area.
  2. Parents, legal guardians, or a responsible person 16 and over must accompany youths under 14 years of age at all times. Anyone under the age of 14 is prohibited from using fitness and strength equipment.
  3. Consult a physician prior to engaging in physical activity. The GVSU Recreation Center is not responsible for accidents or injuries that occur due to the nature of the activity. 
  4. Report injuries, accidents, or equipment failures immediately to Recreation Center Staff.
  5. Appropriate athletic apparel including nonrevealing shirts, athletic shorts or pants, and closed toed/closed heel athletic shoes are required to be worn. See specifics HERE that apply for all area of the Recreation Center.
  6. For safety reasons, all personal belongings must be placed in storage cubbies or lockers. GVSU is not responsible for any personal belongings lost or stolen.
  7. Equipment is not to be removed from activity areas and must be used for its intended purpose.
  8. Tobacco, food, glass bottles, cans, alcohol, drugs, or weapons of any kind are strictly prohibited.
  9. Use of bicycles, rollerblades, skateboards, hoverboards and drones are prohibited inside the Recreation Center.
  10. Only registered service animals are allowed in the facility.
  11. Headphones must be used while listening to personal music.
  12. Use of cameras and video equipment are not allowed.
  13. Advertising or promotional materials must be pre-approved by Management and placed in authorized locations only.
  14. Only qualified Recreation staff may provide exercise instruction and/or private training.
  15. Any scheduled group activity must be pre-approved and scheduled in advance by Athletic and Recreation Facilities Management.
  16. Inappropriate behavior will not be tolerated in the Recreation Center. Participants must abide by the GVSU Student Code in addition to all other county, state and federal laws.
  17. The on-duty supervisors have authority over all activity area conduct and may expel a user from the facility for failure to follow instructions.

Cardiovascular Fitness Area Rules

  1. Participation is “at your own risk.” In the event of an emergency please contact recreation staff or dial 911. If there is damaged equipment, please contact recreation staff.
  2. Participants must be at least 14 years old.
  3. Appropriate athletic apparel including nonrevealing shirts, athletic shorts or pants, and closed toed/closed heel athletic shoes are required to be worn. No jeans, slacks, or studded clothing on upholstered equipment or on any cardio seats.
  4. Inappropriate behavior will not be tolerated in the facility.
  5. For safety reasons, all personal belongings need to be placed in cubbies or lockers. GVSU is not responsible for any belongings lost or stolen. 
  6. Plastic or reusable water bottles are acceptable. 
  7. Wipe down all pads and equipment with sanitizing wipes that you come in contact with following use of machine.
  8. Aerobic/Cardiovascular exercise is healthy but can be overdone. Excessive or intense exercise can be unsafe, so if you have questions about your workout, please consult our fitness and wellness services.

Weight Lifting Center Rules

General Rules:

  1. Participation is “at your own risk.” In the event of an emergency please contact recreation staff or dial 911. If there is damaged equipment, please contact recreation staff.
  2. Participants must be at least 14 years old.
  3. Appropriate athletic apparel including nonrevealing shirts, athletic shorts or pants, and closed toed/closed heel athletic shoes are required. No jeans, slacks, or studded clothing on upholstered seats.
  4. For safety reasons, all personal belongings need to be placed in cubbies or lockers. Bags and jackets are not allowed in the weight room. GVSU is not responsible for any belongings lost or stolen.
  5. Inappropriate behavior will not be tolerated in the facility.
  6. Plastic, non-glass, or reusable water bottles are acceptable. 

Weight Lifting Rules:

  1. Use locks and collars on all bars.
  2. Return all equipment and weight plates to proper location after each use. Do not take equipment out of the area.
  3. Use a spotter when necessary.
  4. Use of chalk and powder is prohibited.
  5. Always wipe down equipment after use.
  6. Maintain control of your weights at all times. No dropping of weights!
  7. Always workout at your own fitness level and ask recreation staff for assistance if necessary.
  8. Weight lifting instruction is available through Campus Recreation services.

Olympic Platform Rules

  1. No dropping of weights from higher than your knees.
  2. Weights must be controlled at all times.
  3. Olympic lifting only allowed within the platforms.
  4. Only one person allowed on the platforms at a time.
  5. No other plates or dumbbells aside from bumper plates allowed on the platforms.
  6. No spotting on Olympic lifts.
  7. Please leave the area cleaner than you found it.

Selectorized Weight Equipment Area Rules

  1. Participation is “at your own risk.” In the event of an emergency please contact recreation staff or dial 911. If there is damaged equipment, please contact recreation staff.
  2. Participants must be at least 14 years old.
  3. Appropriate athletic apparel including nonrevealing shirts, athletic shorts or pants, and closed toed/closed heel athletic shoes are required to be worn. No jeans, slacks, or studded clothing on upholstered equipment.
  4. For safety reasons, all personal belongings need to be placed in cubbies or lockers. GVSU is not responsible for any belongings lost or stolen.
  5. Inappropriate behavior will not be tolerated in the facility.
  6. Plastic or reusable water bottles are acceptable. 
  7. Please read and abide by instructions and precautions posted on each piece of equipment.
  8. No slamming of weight stacks. Lifting should be a controlled motion.
  9. If you are unsure on how to use a piece of equipment, please ask a recreation staff member.
  10. Wipe down all pads and equipment with sanitizing wipes that you come in contact with following use of machine.
  11. Do not take equipment out of the room.

Recreation Center Court Rules

  1. Participation is “at your own risk.” In the event of an emergency please contact recreation staff or dial 911. If there is damaged equipment, please contact recreation staff.
  2. Participants must be at least 14 years old.
  3. Appropriate athletic apparel including nonrevealing shirts, athletic shorts or pants, and closed toed/closed heel athletic shoes are required to be worn. Non marking shoes are required.
  4. For safety reasons, all personal belongings need to be placed in cubbies or lockers. GVSU is not responsible for any belongings lost or stolen.
  5. Inappropriate behavior will not be tolerated in the facility.
  6. Plastic or reusable water bottles are acceptable. 
  7. No dunking or hanging on the rim during open recreational play.
  8. All activities not included above will require written approval from the GVSU professional staff.
  9. Please return all of your equipment to the Equipment Issue Room.

Elevated Track Rules

  1. Participation is “at your own risk.” In the event of an emergency please contact recreation staff or dial 911. If there is damaged equipment, please contact recreation staff.
  2. Parents, legal guardians, or a responsible person 16 years and over must accompany youths under 14 years of age.  
  3. For safety reasons, all personal belongings need to be placed in cubbies or lockers. GVSU is not responsible for any belongings lost or stolen.
  4. Please closely adhere to the directional arrows for the particular day, and all running/walking should             be in one direction.
  5. Walkers should take the inside two lanes only, passing should be done on the outside lanes. Patrons with strollers abide by this same rule.
  6. While on the track lanes, all users must be moving and not stopping or watching play below.
  7. Use caution when changing lanes & entering or leaving the track from the stretching area.
  8. Inappropriate behavior will not be tolerated.

Instructional Fitness Studio Rules

  1. Participation is “at your own risk.” In the event of an emergency please contact recreation staff or dial 911. If there is damaged equipment, please contact recreation staff.
  2. Participants must be at least 14 years old.
  3. Appropriate athletic apparel including nonrevealing shirts, athletic shorts or pants, and closed toed/closed heel athletic shoes or dance shoes are required to be worn. Please tuck shoelaces in if you are spinning.
  4. For safety reasons, all personal belongings need to be placed in cubbies or lockers. GVSU is not responsible for any belongings lost or stolen.
  5. Inappropriate behavior will not be tolerated in the facility.
  6. Plastic or reusable water bottles are acceptable. 
  7. If you are unsure on how to use a piece of equipment, please ask a staff member.
  8. All activities and classes require prior approval and reservation from professional staff to use this space.
  9. Instructor or supervisor with approved credentials must be present at all times.
  10. Use of this area and the sound system require approval from Athletic and Recreation Facilities Management, Campus Recreation, or Movement Science.
  11. Wipe down all pads and equipment with sanitizing wipes that you come in contact with following use of machine.
  12. Do not take equipment out of the room.
  13. Any use of outside equipment requires prior approval from GVSU professional staff.
  14. Please clean equipment after use and return equipment where you found it.

Recreation Center Day-Use Locker Rooms

  1. In the event of an emergency please contact recreation staff or dial 911. If there is damaged equipment, please contact recreation staff.
  2. For the privacy of our patrons, absolutely no cell phone or photographic equipment use allowed in locker rooms.
  3. Please report suspicious activity to the GVSU Recreation Center Staff.
  4. Please dry in the drying area, near the showers.
  5. CAUTION: Locker room floors may be slippery.
  6. All personal belongings should be in a locked locker. GVSU is not responsible for any belongings lost or stolen.
  7. All of these lockers are Day Use Only Lockers on a first come first serve basis.
  8. All lockers are the property of GVSU. A fee will be assessed for locker damage caused by negligence or abuse.
  9. Children 4 years of age and older may not enter the locker room of the opposite sex. Family changing area is available.
  10. If items are left in a locker overnight, there will be a $5.00 charge to retrieve your personal belongings. Any items not picked up will be added to our Lost and Found collection and then sent for disposal.
  11. GVSU Recreation Staff reserves the right to check lockers for unreturned towels, equipment, and to resolve safety/security concerns. Users will be notified should this occur.
  12. Please respect other and clean up after yourself.
  13. Inappropriate behavior will not be tolerated.

Pool Rules

All users must be scanned in to verify eligibility of pool use at the check-in station.

  1. All participants must shower before entering the pool
  2. All participants under the age of 12 must be supervised by an adult.
  3. All participants using the 3m diving board must be at least 16 years old.
  4. No running, rough play, or excessive noise in the pool, on the pool deck, or in the locker rooms.
  5. No food or drink allowed on to the pool deck (bottled water is allowed).
  6. No SCUBA or snorkeling equipment allowed without prior approval by Management.
  7. Do not distract on-duty Lifeguards from responsibilities to the patrons of the pool.
  8. Do not participate in any "breath holding" games.
  9. Do not swim if you have communicable or infectious diseases.
  10. Do not hang from the rim or net of the basketball hoop.
  11. Do not hang from the lane lines.
  12. Obey the Lifeguards at all times.
  13. Lifeguards have the right to limit or regulate: a) activities b) equipment use and c) facility use.
  14. Diving is allowed only in designated areas.
  15. Floatation devices must attach to the child and be approved by a Lifeguard.
  16. Swimming equipment must stay in the shallow end of the pool.
  17. There must be two Lifeguards present at all times for the facility to be in use by the public.
  18. Individuals with a disability requiring an accommodation are asked to please see a lifeguard prior to swimming so they are aware of the current situation.
  19. Guests are responsible for their own towels. If needed, please visit the Recreation Center Front Desk to rent one.
  20. Swim diapers or plastic pants are required of all children who wear diapers.
  21. Starting blocks are for the Varsity Swimming and Diving teams only.
  22. GVSU takes no responsibility of personal injury sustained while swimming in the pool.

Climbing Center Rules

The following guidelines apply to this specific area in addition to the Fieldhouse/ Recreation Center guidelines.

  1. All participants must check-in at the Climbing Center front desk and have a valid Climbing Center waiver on file before climbing, belaying, or spotting. If under 18 years of age, your waiver must be signed by your parent/ legal guardian (older siblings or relatives are not legal guardians).
  2. Running, horseplay, and swinging on the ropes is prohibited.
  3. Rude, offensive, and profane language is prohibited.
  4. All unsafe conditions, damaged or malfunctioning equipment, loose rocks, accidents, and injuries must be reported to the Climbing Center staff as soon as possible.
  5. Only equipment that is specifically manufactured for rock climbing may be used.
  6. Persons on the carpeted area near the wall are responsible for remaining aware of their surroundings and staying out of fall/ swing zones of other climbers. Spectators are strongly encouraged to stay off the carpeted area.
  7. Food and drinks other than water are not allowed on the carpeted area.
  8. Minors must wear a helmet when on the carpeted area, regardless of their level of participation.
  9. Shoes or socks must be worn at all times when climbing.
  10. Standing on or holding onto lead climbing bolts or quickdraws is prohibited.
  11. Technical skills including but not limited to: knots, belaying, lead climbing, and route setting may only be taught by Climbing Center staff.
  12. Persons participating in bouldering must stay below the designated height limit and are strongly encouraged to use a crash pad and have trained spotter(s) present. Down-climbing is strongly encouraged.
  13. All persons wishing to belay must be approved by a member of the Climbing Center staff. Persons who were trained to belay outside our facility must pass a safety check before belaying.
  14. Belayers must belay from their harness, give the climbers their full attention, and maintain an upright body position at all times.
  15. All non-lead belay certified users must attach to a ground anchor when belaying.
  16. Climbers and belayers must go through the appropriate commands/ checks before beginning each climb.
  17. Climbers must tie-in directly to their harness in accordance with the manufacturer's specification using a double figure-eight knot and an approved finishing knot.
  18. Route setting and lead climbing are privileges which may only be practiced with the prior approval of the on-duty Climbing Center staff.
  19. The Climbing Center reserves the right to remove, without refund, any persons found to be offensive, unsafe, or in violation of Climbing Center or Recreation Center facility rules.

Kelly Family Sports Center Rules

  1. All users must check-in at the front desk.
  2. Student ID, Faculty ID, or Membership ID is required for entrance.
  3. Alcohol, tobacco, smoking or control substances are prohibited.
  4. Participants utilize this facility "at their own risk".
  5. Minors under 14 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian at all times.
  6. Food and beverages are permitted only on the main upper level and seating areas.
  7. Any posting of materials must be approved by the facility and displayed in designated areas.
  8. Bicycles, roller blades,skateboards, hoverboards and drones are prohibited inside the building.
  9. The Grand Valley Student Code will be adhered to at all times.

Kelly Family Sports Center Track and Turf Rules

The following guidelines apply to this specific area in addition to the Kelly Family Sports Center guidelines.

  1. No food including gum and sunflower seeds.
  2. Water in a sealed container is the only beverage allowed.
  3. Metal track spikes must be 1/4 inch or less (no other metal spikes/ cleats allowed).
  4. Field paint/ chalk is to be used by management only.
  5. No spitting on any surface.
  6. Perimeter doors are for emergency exit only.
  7. Use of abusive or profane language is prohibited and is grounds for removal.
  8. No using walls as a rebound or backstop.
  9. Store and secure all equipment after use.
  10. Report all damage and injuries to the building staff.

Outdoor Fields and Courts Rules

  1. Use of all courts, as participants or spectators is "at your own risk". All facility users/ spectators should proceed with care and use courts with caution.
  2. Only GVSU individuals and scheduled groups are allowed use of fields. Contact 331-3313 or visit: www.gvsu.edu/sportsfacilities
  3. Courts can be reserved to registered student organizations by contacting 331-3313 or at www.gvsu.edu/sportsfacilities
  4. Open Recreation for activities such as touch football, frisbee, soccer are permitted on the multi-purpose field when no other activities are scheduled if such usage does not damage the turf.
  5. Do not enter fenced varsity soccer field or track stadium without a confirmed reservation.
  6. Use of courts must be in compliance with GVSU's student code at all times. Inappropriate or unsportsmanlike behavior and language may result in immediate and/ or long term denial of access to the outdoor courts.
  7. No alcohol, smoking, or tobacco/ controlled substances allowed.
  8. No beverage other than water or food allowed on the artificial turf surface including gum, candy, and sunflower seeds.
  9. No spitting on the artificial turf surface.
  10. No pets or animals are allowed on the courts, fields or spectator areas.
  11. No vehicles permitted on the field. Golf carts are permitted to serve the needs on the perimeter of each field.
  12. Parking or unloading is not permitted on or near fields. Park and unload in paved lots only.
  13. Cease activity during bad weather, and/ or in conjunction with GVSU officials and staff.
  14. Report all damages to the Kelly Family Sports Center front desk.
  15. Appropriate attire is required at all times.
  16. Tennis shoes are required on the tennis and basketball courts.
  17. Plastic cleats are allowed, no metal cleats on the artificial turf surface.
  18. Track spikes must be pyramid spikes no longer than 1/4 inch on the track surface.
  19. Tennis racquets can be checked out with a GVSU ID at the Kelly Family Sports Center front desk.
  20. Do not adjust tennis net heights.
  21. Do not climb on soccer goals or netting.
  22. No skateboarding allowed on tennis courts.
  23. Hitting of golf balls is not permitted on fields.
  24. Rollerblading on WEST roller hockey court only.
  25. No hoverboarding on any of the courts or fields.
  26. Use of drones is not permitted on any GVSU outdoor fields or courts.  
  27. Return all equipment to original condition/ location after each use.
  28. Please place all litter in a trash receptacle.
  29. Outside accessible restrooms are located on the south side of the Kelly Family Sports Center.
  30. GVSU is not responsible for lost or stolen property.
