Description

What does it mean to be a True American?

Join us for our next Shared Professional Development on Wednesday, March 1st from 9am – 11am, 2250/Grand River Room, Kirkhof Center.  This session explores issues connected to the GVSU 2017 Community Reading Project selection The True American: Murder and Mercy in Texas by Anand Giridharadas.

This session builds on the previous session presented by Shaun Harper by connecting issues of social justice to student success. Panelists will discuss student activism, interfaith understanding, the ‘American Dream’ and white nationalism; there will be also be time for questions and small group discussion. This will be an opportunity for us to have open and honest dialogue about student success at GVSU and how the national political dialogue and social justice issues shape campus climate and directly impact our students. Panelists include:

  • Jen Stewart, Sociology
  • Katie Gordon, Campus Interfaith Resources
  • Sarah King, Religious Studies
  • Louis Moore, History

While it is not a requirement to have read the book in order to attend this session, if you have not had the opportunity to read the book, we do have twenty copies available on a first come, first serve basis.  Please email Marlene Kowalski-Braun at [email protected] to secure a copy.  Copies are available through the University bookstore for purchase at 15.95 + tax.

The annual Community Reading Project (CRP) author lecture will feature Anand Giridharadas speaking on March 23 at 7 pm in the Grand River Room. Find out more about the CRP at http://www.gvsu.edu/read/
