1. CLAS Voyage

Highlights:

The Voyage team is embedding student learning outcomes as part of our design process for the Curriculum Frameworks for High Impact Practices, in support of faculty and student meaning making of the Voyage. These resources will be foundational to the development of a series of handbooks for faculty, staff, students, and partners on how and why the Voyage is implemented.

Kris Pachla, Donovan Anderson, and Kristin Hedges will be presenting the work of the Voyage at the 2023 AAC&U Annual Meeting’s Forum on Open Learning and ePortfolios in January of next year.

Status Updates:

Based on developments related to student learning outcomes, the release of the next draft of the Curriculum Frameworks for High Impact Practices has been delayed to the week of November 28. The Voyage team will seek feedback in person from unit heads at the November 30 meeting, and will release widely to the college that week the Frameworks with feedback mechanisms.

After meetings with the Office of Alumni Relations and the Career Center, the Voyage team is considering collaborating on a series of employer and alumni summits in 2023. These would be designed to simultaneously explore the Voyage and its importance and to collect feedback from our key partners. Look for more information, including opportunities to attend and provide input, in the coming weeks.

Next Steps and Action Items:

The Voyage team is considering how Study Away experiences can be high impact. If you lead or engage in a Study Away experience that you think might align with our High Impact Practices frameworks, please reach out to Kris Pachla or Rachel Paris to discuss.

Consider being a faculty fellow for the 2023-2024 Academic Year. Applications will be available in early January, with a due date of late February.

We continue to welcome any meetings with faculty across the college for ongoing understanding of the Voyage and faculty roles. If you’d like to connect, please reach out to Kris or Rachel to schedule.

2. Student Success Strategies

As a reminder, students who are new to GVSU for the 2022 Fall and 2023 Winter semesters will have a hold placed on their record which will require that they see a professional advisor prior to registering for 2023-24. This includes first-year, transfer, and international students. At this time, only professional advisors can lift the hold, however students are always encouraged to meet with their faculty advisors.  If you meet with a new student, please take a few moments to add advising notes in Navigate.  When the student comes to see us to have the hold released, we will review your notes and assist them with registration.  The Academic Advising Center has a strategic communication plan to reach these students early and often so as not to delay registration for the next academic year.
